Teaching Artist Review

About the Artist

Kahlil has nearly 3 decades of experience working with children of all ages and their families in a myriad of situations and circumstances; primarily as a teacher, counselor, director, and administrator.

He is a compassionate, worldly, innovative, and risk-taking educator dedicated to providing children with liberating educational experiences.

He began his artistry as a youth performing with Kuumba Youth Theatre, a company led by local legend Ndanu Koudou, acting, singing, and dancing in cultural plays and performances.

While attending the Broad Ripple HS magnet, Kahlil furthered his acting acumen by performing in a plethora of well-known plays, including “A Raisin in the Sun“ and “A Midsummer Night's Dream.“ He went on to join Sankofa Fare, formerly a local West African Dance and Drum Troupe, and the Griot Drum Ensemble.

Spending many years perfecting his craft as a storyteller and drummer locally and throughout the Midwest, bringing the West African culture of dance, drum, and storytelling to classrooms and stages throughout.

As a Djeli, also known as a Griot in French culture, Kahlil, will share stories and lessons of antiquity in a relevant, fun, and engaging way for all, but especially for the youngest of our audience members.
